Keene holds public hearing on proposed Comprehensive Dog Control law

The Town of Keene Board convened a public hearing at 5:15 p.m. Jan. 14 to receive public comment on a proposed Local Law on Comprehensive Dog Control. Supervisor Joseph P. Wilson opened the hearing and said the draft is intended to consolidate and update three existing local laws (Local Law 1 of 1998, Local Law 1 of 2001, and a 2010 law).
Residents spoke for and against aspects of the draft. Jeanie Cross recounted two attacks involving unleashed dogs and said, "neither of these things would have happened if the dogs were leashed." Other commenters asked the board to clarify enforcement, how surrendered dogs would be handled and whether there could be designated off‑leash times or locations such as Marcy Field. The Town Clerk recorded three written letters from residents and the hearing recording will be posted to the town website. The hearing was adjourned at 5:47 p.m.
