State trooper reports speed checks on Albany Avenue after resident complaints

Mayor Dorene Weir opened a public hearing Oct. 9 where New York State Trooper Jed Mason summarized recent speed monitoring on Albany Avenue following resident complaints.
Trooper Mason reported that on Sept. 30, during one hour of monitoring of 30 cars, the highest recorded speed was 36 mph in a 30 mph zone; on Oct. 1, during a 45-minute period of 34 cars the top speed was 37 mph and, later that day, across another 45-minute collection of 66 cars the top speed was 38 mph. On Oct. 2 from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. (37 cars) the top speed was 35 mph. Trooper Mason noted the troopers’ marked vehicle was visible during some checks and said the department will continue gathering data but that resources are limited covering neighboring towns: "resident concerns are not being ignored," he said.
Mayor Weir said the village will install signs lowering the posted speed on Albany Avenue to 25 mph. Trustee Susan Patterson asked how residents should make speed complaints; the trooper and Sgt. Pelizza indicated residents may report to the barracks and that, if Sgt. Pelizza approves, residents can submit license-plate photos. Resident Astrid Montagano asked whether troopers could staff repeated shifts similar to the sheriff’s office; Mason said sustained shifts would require additional personnel or overtime.
The exchange clarified problem locations raised by residents, including Hudson Street at the bridge and the southern part of Broad Street near Gaffney, and reinforced that the village will pursue signage and continued data collection.
