Township arborist Richard Wolowitz testified he and an associate inspected the London plane at 62 Pearson and that it ‘‘is probably one of the largest in town’’ and that he would "characterize the tree as a historic and also a rare tree." Wolowitz said an inspection in late July found no signs of major structural disease or significant decay.
DPW Superintendent Mike Horan agreed with Wolowitz’s assessment, saying he observed a full canopy, minimal deadwood, a healthy root flare and no visible disease. Wolowitz's memo and correspondence with the state forester were cited by committee members when discussing whether the tree qualifies as a rare or specimen tree under township code.
