McDowell County Schools superintendent cites record 88% graduation rate, previews ASU chancellor visit

Dr. Tracy Gritz, superintendent of McDowell County Schools, told the board on Aug. 10 that the district’s Class of 2026 earned an 88% graduation rate—"the highest in the history of McDowell County Schools." He credited transportation, custodial, nutrition and technology staff and community partners such as Operation Backpack for helping prepare schools for the upcoming year.
Gritz said the district is preparing to welcome traditional-calendar students Aug. 24 and previewed a visit from Appalachian State University Chancellor Norris at the end of the month to explore partnerships. He also thanked teams that worked across the summer on construction, facilities and safety preparations. The superintendent closed with a personal note of appreciation to his family and staff.
