Dr. Hummer: vacancies down to 35 as Frederick County schools prepare for fall

Slides shown to the committee compared vacancy counts as of July 29, 2026, with those on Aug. 1, 2025, and presenters said they have continued to hire since the slide dates, particularly reducing middle-school openings.
Committee members asked about remaining elementary-level barriers; presenters said some secondary roles were shifted to elementary positions (including special-education assignments) and that recent hires and internal reassignments have helped stabilize staffing. Rachel, who presented the slide set, said long-term substitutes and internal backfills (instructional assistants stepping into teacher roles) have also reduced immediate classroom shortages.
The report contained no formal motions or policy changes; the presentation is intended to inform the board’s upcoming budget and staffing discussions.
