Penn State Extension outlines classes, 4‑H activities and avian influenza concerns

Rob Dickenson of Penn State Extension presented programs and public‑education offerings to the Forest County Commissioners during visitor recognition.
Dickenson distributed a packet that included a free Winter Sowing class scheduled for Feb. 8 and a free Seed Starting class on March 15 led by Master Gardener Susan Witter. He said the extension is preparing an April chainsaw safety training to be coordinated with Fire‑Wise Education and highlighted 4‑H activities led by Justin Heasley that bring agriculture literacy, dairy activities and food science projects into local schools. Dickenson also noted avian influenza remains a concern for wild and game birds, stating that species such as Canadian geese and wild turkeys can carry the disease even where large poultry operations are not present.
The presentation was made during the public visitor recognition portion of the Feb. 5 minutes and was recorded in the meeting packet provided to commissioners.
