District plans $295K in software cuts and holds device purchases to avoid $600K impact on general fund

Technology director Dave Payne told the board the district identified roughly $294,680 in software and service savings by eliminating or reducing underused subscriptions and by folding some maintenance into an E-Rate purchase.
"So that totals, about $295,000 in total... 294,680 and 15 cents to be exact," Dave Payne said as he listed items including switching Zoom to Teams, reducing Grammarly, consolidating firewall maintenance under an E-Rate purchase, and pausing a device purchase that previously was estimated at about $1.1 million but could be trimmed to about $500,000 by sharing carts and using existing devices.
Payne said other line-item savings include moving redaction and event coverage in-house, re-evaluating FortiGate firewall service after the E-Rate purchase, and scaling licensing for services such as Hapara and PowerSchool based on revised student counts. He described refurbishing older laptops for staff as a further cost-saving option that could save roughly $100,000 if 100 devices are refurbished rather than replaced.
