Sheriff's representative reports falling crime trends, outlines school-security work

The Weber County Sheriff'9s Office delivered its monthly report to the council, highlighting overall declines in crime and outlining countywide efforts on school security and staffing. The representative said some noncriminal incident counts are lower than in prior years and cited example figures: "In 2021, there were 398 non criminal. In 2025, there was 251."

The representative described a county wage and compensation study that led to a new 2026 pay scale intended to improve recruitment and retention. He said the office has recently reduced vacancies, has officers in field training, and continues to move recruits through the academy and extended on-the-job training.

On school security, the speaker summarized the county'9s role under House Bill 84 (2024), noting the sheriff or his designee serves as a county security chief responsible for regional site assessments and the Guardian program that trains educators. He identified Matt Pennington as the state division'9s security chief and said the county covers the general-fund costs for the county security chief position. "The Guardian program is one of the components to train educators," the representative said.

The report also touched on specialized units (traffic and investigations), training demands, and a recent high-resource incident in the city used to illustrate response needs. Council members thanked the sheriff'9s representative and asked follow-up questions about staffing and resource allocation.
