The Tarkington ISD Board of Trustees voted on Jan. 20 to decline adoption of the resolution authorized by Senate Bill 11, which allows a school district to designate a daily period for prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious texts. The motion to decline the resolution was made by Kevin Johnson and seconded by Jason Ward; the motion passed 6–0 with Trustee Dwayne Stovall absent.
Dr. Elna Davis, Superintendent, had presented statutory requirements and provided the resolution language required under Texas Education Code §25.0823, and she noted the district must take a record vote on the matter by March 1, 2026. The board’s action at this meeting was a formal decision not to adopt the statutory resolution. The vote tally recorded six yeas, zero nays and one absence.
