At the June 23 work session Wayzata Public Schools' finance team presented the FY2025-26 preliminary General Fund picture and emphasized the district's financial outlook hinges on enrollment assumptions.
The district used an enrollment projection of 13,186 for FY2025-26 (an increase of 426 students over the prior estimate). Slides stated the district expects to increase the unassigned General Fund balance by $2.9M for FY2025-26 if enrollment and other assumptions hold. The deck noted two ways of viewing the budget: with the Long-Term Facilities Maintenance (LTFM) adjustment included (showing a revenue shortfall) and excluding that adjustment to show a more operational view. With LTFM included the presentation showed total General Fund revenues of $231,722,112 and expenditures of $237,296,147 (a net -$5,574,035). The slides flagged a negative LTFM adjustment of $8,811,304 due to a 2022-2023 fiscal-year adjustment that sits in restricted fund balance.
Finance staff told the board that the projected $2.9M increase largely depends on the 426-student projection and continued cost containment; the deck warned that adding staff or spending before students arrive would reverse gains and put the district back into cost-containment. The presentation also noted several variables that could change projections, including staff negotiations, special education cost trends, and whether the General Education Formula keeps pace with inflation.
No formal action or vote was taken during the work session; the finance presentation closed with a questions slide. All numerical figures below appear on finance slides provided to the board.
