Commission signals support for prospective enforcement of chain-link fence prohibition

ACM/DCD Glen Cole told the Commission the city’s zoning code has a long-standing prohibition on chain-link fences in residential zoning that has not been consistently enforced. Staff identified approximately 200 chain-link fence permits in electronic records since about 2000, including roughly 20 issued since current staff joined the City.
Cole asked whether the Commission preferred to amend the code to explicitly permit chain-link (with material standards) or to enforce the existing prohibition going forward. Commissioners generally favored leaving the prohibition in place and enforcing it prospectively without retroactive enforcement of existing lawful repairs; they expressed a preference to encourage a gradual move away from chain link over time. No formal vote or ordinance amendment was taken; ACM/DCD Cole said he would convey the Commission’s direction to City Council for further consideration.
