Public Works says in-house stormwater work saved money after joint ditch clearing with Deerfield Beach

Public Works Director Acarbaugh (speaker 3) told the commission the NE 38th Street drainage work was completed ahead of schedule and under budget and that crews partnered with Deerfield Beach staff to clear a clogged ditch that had been holding up to 20'4 inches of standing water.
"The project went great. We had a couple conflicts, but we worked around it, and we ended up coming in ahead of schedule and under budget," Acarbaugh said. He described the joint effort as roughly 20 city staffers and Deerfield crews who cleared roots, sediment and debris and expanded a narrow drainage channel to about 4 feet wide and several feet deep in places.
The clearing reduced chronic street flooding and mosquito breeding in the north part of the city and allowed the city to avoid a larger contracted project. Acarbaugh said bids for a separate 21st Avenue stormwater project recently came in and staff expect to recommend a contractor at an upcoming meeting.
