Residents, councilors criticize notice and speed of the discontinuance process

MANSFIELD — Multiple participants at the Aug. 10 special town meeting said they were surprised by how the discontinuance item was publicized and urged the town to improve notice for similar actions.
Brian Coleman and Aaron Bowman both said they saw insufficient posted notices and recommended delaying or negotiating conveyance terms before approving a discontinuance. "I didn't see any signs... Nothing was posted out on the boards in the library or the senior center," Coleman said. Bowman and others suggested that the clerk’s posting practice and the town’s public-notice procedures be reviewed so more residents learn about substantive items in advance.
Others, including some councilors, acknowledged the concern but said the statutory steps require this vote as the first procedural move; they encouraged residents to participate in the upcoming planning and zoning and council hearings where terms and environmental reviews will be considered.
