Pitman closes Sunset Auditorium to public events citing safety, repairs required

Mayor Razze and borough staff announced at the June 9 work session that Sunset Auditorium will be closed to outside groups and the public 'for the time being' after recent inspections identified safety issues.
Administrator McCafferty told Mayor and Council she and Recreation Director Fox have decided to close the building pending repairs and that the space "can be used for emergencies only, however, for outside groups and the public, it will be closed for the time being." She said caution tape will be placed on the building and that any repair work will follow budget and capital approval, after which an architect will be engaged to provide cost and scope estimates. Councilman Uyehara asked for a timeframe; McCafferty said an estimate will come only after budget approval and the architect's review.
During public comment, Walt Madison recounted volunteer efforts in the past to repair the auditorium, asking the council to consider the community's history of maintenance when discussing repairs. Council members clarified that a forthcoming CDBG grant resolution at the regular meeting was not for Sunset Auditorium but for ADA improvements on Lincoln Avenue (curbs and crosswalks).
