Board hears staff survey on Trails SEL program; requests broader review and alternatives

Administration presented results from a staff survey of the Trails social‑emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. Of roughly 88–89 respondents (about one‑third of teachers), 54.5% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with Trails and 62.9% said the curriculum meets students’ SEL needs to a moderate or great extent. At the same time, 25.8% were unsure and 14.6% favored exploring other SEL options.
Trustees asked for a broader sampling that includes behavioral support staff and building administrators, and several requested that administration present a set of alternative SEL curricula for comparison and a plan for implementation. One trustee said the district should replicate the prior curriculum selection process used for literacy, which included staff piloting and in‑person reviews. Administration agreed to provide additional detail, expand the survey, and schedule a work session to review options and implementation implications.
Board members emphasized concerns about implementation fatigue—several new curricula are being rolled out this cycle—and asked for clarity on which staff are responsible for implementation in each building. Administration committed to a follow‑up that will include usage breakdown by school, input from behavioral staff, and a list of possible alternative SEL curricula for the board to review.
