Board approves communicable‑disease slides for fifth grade after MDE change

The Monroe Public Schools Board unanimously approved communicable‑disease slides for fifth grade during the April 14 meeting after administration said a change required by MDE moved the grade assignment earlier.
David explained the materials had been vetted by the SEED committee and a public hearing and recommended approval for fifth grade. As staff said, there is “a new requirement from MDE that by the end of 5th grade, our students need to have, exposure to, HIV and communicable disease slides prevention.” Board members asked staff to ensure all documentation and handbooks clearly indicate fifth grade, rather than older wording that listed grades 3–5, and staff agreed to update paperwork.
The board moved and approved the slides by roll call.
