The presenters told the committee that pairing solar with a move from natural gas to electric heating and cooling would produce larger utility savings than solar alone. They noted incentives that could reduce district costs, including programs that could cover up to half the panels, Focus on Energy incentives, and a federal 30% direct pay for nonprofit renewable installations. The presentation estimated a project cost of about $2,500,000 and projected payback of about 12 years for the elementary school and 16 years for the middle/high school. Presenters also advised under-sizing arrays if the district does not install an expensive battery system.
