Henrico County's Sustainability Director briefed the Board on the county's climate action planning efforts at a special meeting on Dec. 16. The county plans to build from PlanRVA's regional climate action framework and align with the Virginia DEQ's statewide climate action plan, with a drafting and public engagement timeline that stretches through spring and summer 2026.
Sam Hudson said the county will tailor PlanRVA’s 22 mitigation strategies to local priorities, including municipal and school operations, private‑sector opportunities and adaptation measures focused on extreme heat. He described data collection, preliminary analysis and staff and community outreach continuing into early 2026, with a draft plan expected in spring 2026 and a public comment period followed by a final plan by summer 2026. "We will build from PlanRVA's climate action plan that includes 22 mitigation strategies," Hudson said.
The Board heard that the Sustainability and Resilience Advisory Committee (SRAC) will be a key part of outreach and that Henrico's plan will center county‑level actions rather than attempting to duplicate DEQ’s statewide plan. No votes or formal commitments to regulatory changes were recorded at the special meeting; the item was informational and staff will return with draft materials, outreach schedules and opportunities for public comment.
