Airport staff presented a plan to submit an initial state grant application (through labor and economic development channels) seeking funding for airfield equipment, pavement infrastructure and facility improvements. The presenter said the airport had been awarded state funding late last year and recommended moving forward with the Lake Superior Community Partnership (LSCP) to submit the application; the board moved and approved stafF to submit the application with the understanding the board will review any substantial changes to funded items.
During discussion a staff member said the award last year had been for $2,000,000 and that applications must be submitted by Sept. 15; another commissioner later referred to a $3,000,000 discretionary pot that had been secured with LSCP's lobbying effort for the region. The presentation said the county would have until 2030 to spend awarded funds and could amend the grant contract later with board approval.
