Board approves Lifesaver wristband tracking purchase for Aging Services using KBIC 2% funds

County staff presented a proposal from Aging Services for a Lifesaver tracking system that uses wristbands and radio equipment to help locate people with dementia or special needs who become lost. Staff said the newer system would be more robust than the county's older Life Tracker setup, could be networked with other sheriff offices, and was recommended as a cost-effective upgrade; the board moved to follow staff recommendation and approved the purchase.
An Aging Services representative described how the system works: "This system is designed to monitor patients or clients within their organization if they become lost ... they basically wear a wristband," the staff member said. Commissioners noted the purchase would be paid from reserves and from 2% gaming funds; a commissioner confirmed those 2% funds came from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC).
