Conservation district asks county for $75,000 to sustain operations

Jeff, representing the Marquette County Conservation District, asked commissioners for $75,000 in county operating support to sustain the district’s infrastructure and employees and to maintain free services to landowners.

"The $75,000 that we are requesting would primarily go towards that to sustain and retain, our infrastructure and our employees," Jeff said. He noted the district receives roughly $40,000 from the state and relies on grants and federal support for the remainder of its operating budget.

Commissioners asked for a copy of the district’s current budget and requested project‑level reporting for recent years; Jeff said annual reports and a five‑year plan are available on the district website. Board members also discussed MSU’s role and whether the university funds a conservation district staff position; Jeff said he would confirm details and return with clarification.

No final funding decision was made; the request was entered for consideration during upcoming budget discussions and the district indicated it would return to the board for follow‑up during the budget cycle.
