Margaret Brown of 404 East Magnetic Street urged the Marquette County Board of Commissioners to draft a countywide resolution declaring the disposal of cigarette and cigar butts on the ground or in water "unacceptable" and to let local jurisdictions decide how to implement it. She said she has been collecting cigarette litter and shipped 35 pounds of butts out of Marquette County across May and June as part of a recycling effort and plans to bring a formal proposal to a future meeting.
"Cigarette butts are the world's worst contaminant," Brown told the board, referring to academic studies and international reports she had reviewed. She asked county staff to place her proposal before the Marquette County Health Department and said she will continue to attend meetings and gather public support. Several commissioners responded positively during comments, saying they would like staff to draft a resolution and share it for public review before any funding decisions.
