Board sets open-enrollment seats and special-education criteria

The Granton Area School District School Board approved a motion on Jan. 12 setting the number of open-enrollment seats available for special education and related services and adopted criteria for determining additional space based on students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
The motion, made by Mark Elmhorst and seconded by Douglas Eichten, established caps that include: EC/4K speech & language — 6 total; K–12 speech & language — 16 total; EC/4K two classrooms — 3 total; K–6 cross-categorical — 11 total; and 7–12 cross-categorical — 13 total. The district said it may also consider class-size limits, staffing capacity, minutes/hours of services, group size (1:1 or small group) and type of staff required when evaluating whether additional space is available for a non-resident student's IEP needs.
Board members adopted the motion by voice vote. The motion ties the availability of seats to operational constraints and to the intensity and type of services required in students' IEPs; the district did not specify how many current non-resident applicants exist or whether these caps will change during the school year.
