The Brightwaters board approved hiring a geese‑control service that uses border collies from May 1 through Sept. 7 for 18 weeks at $240 per week (total $4,320). The board moved and approved the hire by voice vote.
The mayor (S4) and residents also discussed recent observations of dead geese in the village lakes and the possible presence of avian disease. “A bunch of geese were found dead in the lake here… Apparently, this bird disease that was around last year,” the mayor said while describing why some geese did not survive the winter.
Residents raised concerns about public health and pets. One resident (S5) said veterinary reports suggest dogs can become ill after ingesting sick or dead birds and asked whether animal control or shelter staff would pick up deceased birds outside normal DPW hours. The board said it would seek notifications from the town and county, check shelter pickup protocols and follow up with residents.
Trustees also discussed humane geese‑management options such as egg oiling; a resident suggested egg oiling as more effective than simply chasing geese with dogs. The village will contact the geese‑control provider to determine available services and coordinate next steps.
