Suffolk County officers warn Brightwaters residents about electric bicycles

Suffolk County officers attended the meeting to update the board on summer patrol plans and neighborhood safety. An officer urged residents to watch children riding electric bicycles and cautioned that the village is not authorized to pursue juveniles who run from officers.
An officer advised, “I would highly recommend you don't buy them the electric bicycles. But if you do, make sure they're safe,” noting that some models can reach high speeds and that injuries often occur when riders fall over handlebars into vehicles. Officers said speed-display signs can slow law-abiding drivers but noted repeat speeders commonly ignore them.
