The Village of Brightwaters opened a public hearing on Local Law 1, 2026, which would authorize the board to override the state‑imposed tax cap if necessary while the village compiles budget figures.
Mayor (S4) explained the board did not plan to vote on breaking the cap that night. “We don't have numbers set yet… we're not gonna vote on this tonight on whether we're gonna break the cap or not. But it's just a tool,” the mayor said. Trustees emphasized the decision is a procedural step to preserve flexibility while staff completes overtime, insurance and department increase estimates.
The board said the tentative budget will be prepared and published in advance of the April budget hearing, giving residents time to review projected spending and revenue. The board also encouraged resident input during the scheduled budget hearing in April.
