Rockport proposes two literacy and two math acceleration specialists at elementary level

The committee heard a proposal to bolster elementary intervention supports by hiring two literacy acceleration specialists and two math acceleration specialists, with roles split to cover K–2 and 3–5 scheduling needs. A staff presenter explained the change grew out of data showing third- through fifth-grade students lacked sufficient coverage after earlier staffing reductions.
"When we look at the elementary data in numeracy and literacy, we realized that we had 2 professionals on the literacy side and only 1 on the math side, and which means we can only get to 50% of those kids," a staff member said, explaining the acceleration-support rationale. Committee members confirmed the positions would be posted and that whether those hires become Title I-funded will depend on final hiring and assignment decisions.
The proposal aims to round out acceleration support districtwide and was presented as part of programmatic priorities tied to the district’s strategic plan. Committee members asked staff to ensure the FY27 budget book describes whether the roles are grant-funded or part of the recurring operating budget and how the positions will overlap with existing Title I services.
