The Public Works Committee rejected a request to amend a contract to add up to $15,000 in oversight funding for the Port Bay REDI project, voting 0-5 on the transmittal on June 3.
Ron Thorn, Water Conservation District Manager, said recent bids came in higher than anticipated and were rejected; the project will be rebid after specifications are reviewed. Supervisor Lynn Chatfield recommended using REDI funding to cover engineering costs and cautioned that "county taxpayers should not be responsible for an additional $15,000 expense," arguing the DEC and project engineers had been primary beneficiaries of repeated modeling requests. Kevin Rooney, Superintendent of Public Works, said the requested funding was intended for construction oversight and suggested waiting for final project costs because "the full $15,000 may not ultimately be needed." The committee voted 0-5 against the resolution.
Thorn told the committee the bay is not currently in a "danger zone" and said he preferred to evaluate the next round of bids before deciding whether further work is required. The committee provided no new funding and will revisit the project after the rebid process.
