Shelter Island board adopts $13.57 million proposed budget for 2026–27

The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education on April 20 adopted a proposed $13,573,689 budget for the 2026–2027 school year to present to voters at a budget vote on May 19, 2026. Superintendent Brian Doelger led the presentation laying out why the district must exceed the property tax cap, previous cuts since 2020, recommended revenues and anticipated impacts on local taxes. "BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Shelter Island Union Free School District adopts the proposed budget as presented for the 2026-2027 school year in the total amount of $13,573,689," the board resolution states.
Board members approved the resolution by motion (moved by Margaret Colligan; seconded by Karina Montalvo) with a unanimous vote. Doelger told attendees the district will hold a public budget hearing on May 11 and that the budget’s adoption by the board means the proposal will go to voters; he also described the Appropriated Fund Balance as an applied fund balance set aside to help balance next year’s budget. Board member Anthony Rando stressed the need for long-term planning and restructuring to keep future budgets within the tax cap, while Margaret Colligan said she supports regional collaboration with East Hampton to save costs.
