District says it is making progress but 'not closing the achievement gap,' in SOA progress report

Jody presented the district's final progress report under the Student Opportunity Act and summarized the evidence-based programs the district selected. She said the report pulls together support systems, curriculum and targeted supports and that the district will write a new three-year plan next spring for submission to DESE.
"The highlight is we are not closing the achievement gap," Jody said, noting that the district's two identified groups for targeted work are students with disabilities and students from low-income households. She reviewed where gaps are largest (10th grade ELA and 8th/10th grade math for students with disabilities) and said the district plans to adopt a social-emotional screener, add a math-acceleration specialist in elementary grades and expand an intensive-learning program to support students moving into grades 3–5.
Committee members asked about data choices and applauded the transparency; Jody said the next SOA plan will be more collaborative and more fully developed than the current plan.
