Church and volunteers win council approval for Christmas and homecoming parade routes and closures

Representatives from Christ United Church requested closure of the square for the 2025 Christmas-on-the-Square celebration and proposed a parade route; the church told council it would coordinate traffic control with the sheriff's office and invited council members to participate in a community float. The church requested Nov. 29 from about 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; council approved Nov. 29 with road closures beginning earlier in the evening (recorded motion set closures to begin at about 5:45 p.m.).
"We would like to request the closing of both sides of the square for the 2025 Christmas on the square during and after the parade. We are requesting the date of November 29 from 3PM to 9PM," Dana Brown of Christ United Church said during public comment. Council discussed staging logistics, vendor access and the need to secure signatures from merchants when requested, and the council moved/seconded motions approving the parade route and waiving the normal application fee for the event.
Council also approved a request to close the square for the high-school homecoming parade on Oct. 8 and directed staff to coordinate details with the school and sheriff’s deputies. Staff confirmed volunteers and the church would handle much of the traffic-control planning and would supply final routing and staging maps to the city before the events.
