Michelle Yirce and elementary teachers presented the "Building Thinkers" initiative May 11, describing an aligned pre-K through 5 curriculum that integrates English language arts and science and emphasizes data-driven instruction and observable learning targets.
Presenters said the approach has produced increased engagement and rigor, more aligned instruction across grades and higher achievement indicators. Examples cited included preschool play-based units, K' 2 literacy tied to science, a read-think-talk-write model in third grade, fourth-grade poetry units and fifth-grade leadership and social-studies projects.
