Voters in the Shelter Island Union Free School District approved the 2026–2027 budget, $13,573,689, at the district’s annual meeting and election on May 19, 2026. Deputy District Clerk Mallory Clark declared, “The Budget had passed for the 2026-2027 school year with a 68.1 percent majority passing rate.”
The budget requires a tax levy increase of 6.78%, which the district record says exceeds the statutory levy limit (the state tax cap) and therefore needed approval by 60% of qualified voters present. A total of 806 votes were cast: 549 yes, 256 no and 1 blank. The board recessed while results were tabulated and reconvened later that evening to certify the outcome. The budget will fund the district’s operations for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.
