Central Virginia Electric and Firefly report near-complete broadband buildout, crews responding to storm outages
Summary
Central Virginia Electric and Firefly Fiber told the Buckingham County board that nearly all county fiber is in place (about 98%), almost 3,800 households are connected toward a projected 4,500, and crews are working to splice remaining connections after a storm that left roughly 1,500 county customers without power.

Galen Creekmore, government affairs and key accounts manager for Central Virginia Electric and Firefly Fiber Broadband, told the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors that the broadband rollout in the county is nearing completion and crews are working to finish remaining splices.
"All the fiber essentially is built, other 98%," Creekmore said, and added that the project has reached about 3,800 connections toward an anticipated 4,500. He said the remaining work centers on a small reconnect segment off Route 60 east of Dylan — roughly two miles of underground placement that requires VDOT permits — and on splicing last-mile fiber to homes in the Dominion electric footprint.
Creekmore also updated the board on storm impacts. "In Buckingham right now, we have just under 1,500 folks out of power, and we have crews dispatched and on the ground right now," he said, describing straight-line winds that hit the region. He said the rollout is funded with a mix of loan funds and grants and that installation is free for residents once service reaches their area.
The presentation included a request that residents preregister via the provider's project page so installers can schedule hookups; Creekmore said reimbursement rules create an incentive to finish splicing and close out loan-funded work quickly. The board did not take formal action on the presentation but thanked the company for the update.
