The Board of Education on June 9 approved a five-day educational trip to Walt Disney World for 31 sixth- and seventh-grade students, including a physics seminar and park visits scheduled for Oct. 26–30, 2026. The motion to approve the presentations and associated arrangements was made by Margaret Colligan and seconded by Karina Montalvo; the motion passed unanimously.
Presenters Jennifer Gulluscio and Trish Goff described a seminar at Hollywood Studios where students would conduct experiments related to laws of motion, energy mechanics and centripetal motion before testing concepts on rides. The board heard trip logistics: 46 total travelers including nine parent chaperones and six staff; total trip cost is $68,824. According to the presentation, students are expected to raise or pay about $57,654, the Shelter Island Educational Foundation will contribute $1,333, and the district’s share of expenses is approximately $11,170. The presenters said a grant application was submitted to cover the seminar cost.
The board did not amend the trip budget at the meeting and approved the request as presented. The board’s approval authorizes organizers to proceed with planning and fundraising; the motion language recorded in the minutes was “BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Board hereby approves the following action 9.1.”
