Board approves consent agenda despite concerns about student mobile hot spots

The Granite School District Board of Education approved the routine consent agenda on July 1, 2025, by a 6–1 vote after a brief exchange about the district’s use of mobile hot spots to provide internet access for students.
Board member Kim Chandler questioned the district’s involvement with Equal Opportunity Schools and asked about safeguards on the mobile hot spots. Superintendent Ben Horsley responded, “the mobile hot spots provide internet access to impoverished students. There are filters in place and the speeds do not provide excessive access to allow streaming but are adequate for students to access Canvas. The funding is provided through a state grant.” The consent package included minutes, purchases, change orders, personnel actions and financial reports.
Kris Nguyen moved to accept the consent agenda; Karyn Winder seconded. President Nicole McDermott called the vote; the motion passed with six yeas and one nay (Kim Chandler). The board recorded attendance of seven members at the meeting.
