Granite School District board adopts preliminary 2025-26 budget and sets preliminary tax rate

The Granite School District Board of Education voted June 17 to adopt the proposed 2025-26 budget and to set a preliminary tax rate of 0.006164, a rate district staff said would raise about $14 million to help balance next year’s spending.
Board member Connie Burgess moved to adopt the proposed budget and Kris Nguyen seconded; the motion passed 5–1 with Kim Chandler voting nay and Karyn Winder absent. During presentation, district staff told the board the proposed tax change is subject to the State Basic Levy and described the increase as “about a $14-million-dollar tax increase to balance the budget” and “about 9%, or $106 a year for an average home.”
The board’s action follows a formal budget presentation by Brian Ipson and Business Administrator Todd Hauber, who outlined district priorities and said the general fund faces a $13.2 million deficit in the current plan. The board debated components of the capital plan and operating assumptions before voting.
President Nicole McDermott called the vote. The board also authorized staff to pursue the statutory steps required for finalizing tax rates once state-level levy adjustments are known. A Truth-in-Taxation hearing on the proposed levies was scheduled for Aug. 5, 2025.
