Iona says new detention system will curb runoff; village engineers ask for coordination

Applicant engineers told the planning board the revised design adds an underground detention system beneath the tennis courts (roughly the size of a tennis court, using 4‑foot deep HDPE modular units) and maintains the infiltration system under the baseball field to capture runoff from roofs, courts, parking and buildings.
"This has allowed us to significantly reduce the runoff...we're reducing the runoff from the site by about 70% to Crawford Avenue," said Mike Tucker of Langan Engineering, explaining the detention and outlet‑control/weir arrangement. Reviewing engineer Rick Bolander (KACJ) and the village’s planner said the detention meets the applicant’s on‑site goals but stressed the Crawford drainage system receives runoff from roughly 178 acres and asked for more detail on connections, inlets and how the site will interact with the downstream system.
Board members and residents repeatedly asked for coordination with the village Crawford remediation program and for more granular calculations (e.g., how many gallons will be detained in major storms). The board listed drainage coordination, detailed inlet/pipe design and additional engineering memos among materials it expects before further action.
