Rockport awarded $34,000 grant to expand Project Lead the Way for middle school

The Rockport School Committee heard that the district received a $34,000 grant in March to expand Project Lead the Way (PLTW) for students in grades 6–8. Jody, the district's director of teaching and learning, said the award far exceeded the expected maximum of $10,000 and will fund a three-year rollout that starts with automation and robotics in year one, introduces a 'medical detectives' biomedical-oriented course in year two, and adds design and modeling in year three.
Jody explained the plan creates a progression so each grade takes distinct courses rather than repeating the same year-to-year, with the goal of preparing students for a high-school STEM pathway and an eventual capstone course. She noted the program will increase access to engineering and computer-science options for middle-school students and pointed to an upcoming student showcase on May 8 at the New Balance Center in Boston where students present project outcomes.
