Aldermen OK agreement to house Kearney arrestees in Caldwell County

The Kearney Board of Aldermen approved an ordinance authorizing the city to enter an agreement with the Caldwell County sheriff’s office to confine city arrestees on a temporary basis. Police Chief Mark Thomas said the arrangement provides a place to hold people charged with city offenses such as domestic‑violence incidents and described the agreement as "a very economical opportunity."
Chief Thomas told the board that the city previously relied on a Clinton County arrangement but that Clinton County asked to be removed from that MOU earlier in the year; he said the Caldwell County agreement serves as the needed alternative. The ordinance was read on first and second readings and approved by unanimous voice vote at the meeting.
