President issues executive order to set "gold standard" childhood vaccine recommendations and expand research

The president announced an executive order that he said will establish ‘‘gold standard’’ childhood vaccine recommendations and give parents more choice over the timing of immunizations. "Effective immediately, my administration is recognizing gold standard childhood vaccine recommendations for only 11 core vaccinations," he said, and said some vaccines — including hepatitis B, influenza and COVID‑19 — would no longer be recommended for all children.
The order, the president said, also directs federal agencies to expand research and safety monitoring and to use "every tool at our disposal" to support the recommendations. An HHS official introduced at the briefing said HHS and CDC revised the immunization schedule on Jan. 5 to reduce the number of universally recommended diseases and that the administration will pursue safety studies, monitoring efforts and state engagement to implement changes. The president said the attorney general was tasked to "advance legal challenges against states that violate children's rights to religious or medical vaccination exemptions."
