Public works reports $5 million water tower project, grant-funded safety and connectivity studies

City Engineer and acting Public Works Director Warren Snyders updated the Board of Aldermen on active projects, grants and operational metrics for the city's water and wastewater systems.
Snyders said the water tower replacement project is a $5,000,000 capital investment and that the city has 17 active construction and consultant contracts. He described two grants from the Mid-America Regional Council to study traffic safety at the Nation Road/162nd Street intersection and to plan sidewalks, bicycle accommodations and shared-use paths to improve citywide connectivity and downtown access.
On system operations, Snyders reported the water department sold 74,000,000 gallons in the quarter, purchased 41,000,000 gallons from Kansas City, and confirmed 86% of service lines as non-lead while 542 service lines remain of unknown material (the city must confirm 10% of those remaining each year). He also said the sewer plant treated 87,000,000 gallons this quarter (22,000,000 through UV) and that plant capacity fluctuates seasonally.
During a brief exchange about the roughly 13,000,000-gallon difference between treated sewer volume and water sold, Snyders attributed a portion to maintenance flushing required during the chloramine conversion and to inflow and infiltration (I&I). The board did not take action beyond receiving the report.
