Two housing advocates used the public-comment period at the East Palo Alto City Council special meeting to urge the council to preserve the city's Inclusionary Housing Ordinance.
"I just wanted to express, my support for the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance," said Ophelia Bayo, who identified herself as a housing advocate from East Palo Alto. A second caller introduced as Kenya Najjar said they "live and also work in East Palo Alto" and "reiterate[d] my support for inclusionary housing ordinance," urging council to pursue solutions that would not weaken the policy.
Advocates framed the ordinance as a tool to assure long-term affordability and stability for long-term residents. Bayo said she had participated in the policy's development in prior public meetings and asked the council to "figure out how to advance inclusionary housing in a way that feels reasonable and beneficial to East Palo Alto." Najjar pressed council to "continue defending this vital tool that ensures affordability and stability for our community members long term."
