Representative Powell (speaker 5) presented House Bill 22-10 describing a permissive local option to waive local hotel/motel taxes for county residents who are temporarily displaced during a governor-declared emergency. "This would allow locals, by complete (permissive) the ability to waive the local motel and hotel tax for residents who were displaced," the sponsor said, adding that residents would have to sign a form verifying displacement and be residents of the county.
The sponsor told the committee the measure was designed to reduce an unexpected financial burden on displaced residents who must pay taxes intended primarily to support tourism; he said the provision would apply only when the county opted in and only during a governor-declared emergency. The committee voted to send the bill on to finance/ways and means.
