Board Chair Ben Phillip announced his intention to resign effective Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the June 3 meeting. The board expressed appreciation for his service and discussed next steps to fill the vacancy.
Clerk Laurel Hood briefed the board on the legal process: because more than two years remain in Chair Phillip’s term state law (Minn. Stat. § 123B.09, subd. 5b) requires a special election this November to elect someone to serve the remainder of the term, which will begin when results are certified later in November and extend to December 2027. In the interim the board has authority to appoint a temporary member.
Hood called for a special meeting on Tuesday, June 10 at 5:30 p.m. to finalize the appointment process and take formal action. The board did not take an interim appointment at the June 3 meeting; it directed staff to publish notice of the special meeting and the steps for public application to the temporary vacancy.
