Committee approves $750,000 WQIP grant for Montgomery salt barn to reduce runoff into Wallkill River

The Orange County Physical Services Committee on June 22 accepted and appropriated a $750,000 Water Quality Improvement Project (WQIP) award from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to enlarge salt storage at the Montgomery Salt Barn. Committee member John J. Revella made the motion, which was seconded by Matthew Fascaldi and carried unanimously. The award is split $600,000 in state funds and a $150,000 county match and will increase existing Capital Project 395 (Proposed Project No. 55). The project was determined to be a Type II action under NYCRR Part 617.5(c)(9).
Ryan McGuire, deputy commissioner in the Department of Public Works’ Division of Engineering, said the airport’s existing salt barn is old and holds roughly "one storm event’s worth" of salt, requiring deliveries to the Goshen campus and trucking to the airport. He told the committee the airport property drains directly to the Wallkill River and that improved covered storage would reduce the risk of salt reaching surface or ground waters. The committee recorded the motion as carried with all in favor. The Legislature will increase the capital project and advance the procurement and design steps as appropriate.
