Ladd authorizes up to $15,000 change order to use steel-slag surface on East Cleveland Street

The Ladd Village Board on July 13 approved a change order to pursue a steel-slag (carbide aggregate) surface treatment on East Cleveland Street in place of the originally bid tar-and-chip application. Engineer Adam Ossola told the board the carbide-treated surface used by nearby jurisdictions appeared to last substantially longer and did not show asphalt bleeding in hot weather; Ossola said it is "approximately $10,000.00 more than chip seal," and Trustee Dan Nelson noted prior local experience suggests it may be cost-effective over time.
Attorney Patrick Barry recommended instructing the engineer to pursue the change order so the project could continue. Trustee Dan Nelson moved to authorize Village President Frank Cattani to sign a change order to change to steel slag not to exceed $15,000; Trustee Jan Martin seconded and the motion carried 5-0 (Trustee Bernie Victor absent). The board and engineer said they await a firm vendor quote before finalizing the procurement.
