Ladd trustees table Marquis Energy enterprise-zone expansion after residents raise concerns

At its June 9 meeting the Ladd Village Board postponed action on a proposed amendment to the Bureau-Putnam Enterprise Zone that would clear the way for a Marquis Energy expansion.
Two residents from Hennepin addressed the board during public comment. Donna Blomquist said she opposed the expansion, citing the risk of "industrial overdevelopment of agricultural land" and warning that the zone "is nearing its state-mandated 20-square-mile cap," which she said could limit future development opportunities for other communities. Brittany Blomquist added that tax incentives for large corporations could have a "negative economic impact on the Putnam County school district," a concern she said should weigh on the board's deliberation.
After hearing those comments, the board decided it needed more information and tabled the item until the June 23 meeting, when a Marquis Energy representative and James Durdin from NCICG are expected to attend to answer questions. There was no vote on the substance of the amendment at the June 9 session.
The decision to delay ensures the board will have time to gather additional details about the proposal and its potential effect on the enterprise zone's remaining allocation and on local taxing bodies before considering final action.
