The Del City Board of Adjustment granted a variance Aug. 10 for a garage conversion at 2201 Candy Lane, conditioning approval on the property owner widening the driveway within one year.
Board member Christy Duane moved to approve the application "on the condition that the driveway is widened within a year." City staff had told the board an existing storage building appears present on aerial imagery and recommended approval while advising that a driveway expansion to accommodate four cars would be preferable.
Applicant Jose Cortez told the board his family has lived at the house about 10 years and said, "Our family's getting bigger," explaining the conversion would add a second bathroom and allow in-laws to live there. Cortez said the property already has a roughly "16 by 20" storage shed and that he plans to widen the driveway later when funds permit, adding he would obtain the proper permits.
After discussion the board approved the variance with the driveway-widening condition and set an effective compliance date of roughly Aug. 11 of next year for the driveway work. Staff will monitor compliance and can condition final permits on meeting the driveway requirement.
