Board considers backup generator and IPWMAN membership after tornado to protect wastewater operations

Brandon Smith told the Committee the April 17 storm damaged equipment at the wastewater treatment plant and emphasized the "importance of acquiring a back-up generator for the waste water treatment plant to avoid a back up of sewage." He reported the sewer department lost a main screen and that replacement will be required in the near term.
Smith said the Village plans to draft a resolution to join IPWMAN (Illinois Public Works Mutual Aid Network) for "$100 a year" to allow access to outside manpower during catastrophes. Smith also reported broad mutual-aid in the tornado response: 11 fire departments were called from outside town and 83 volunteers arrived to assist.
Why it matters: wastewater backup power is a near-term public-health and environmental protection issue; joining a mutual-aid network would create a recurring membership cost but expand emergency labor options during large incidents.
